The central data point: more than half of coaches use hybrid
Trainerize's 2026 State of Personal Training industry report confirms what many were observing on the ground: hybrid coaching — in-person training combined with online follow-up — is now the dominant format. About 50% of coaches surveyed use it as their primary model, versus 32% online-only and 14% in-person-only.
This is a historical reversal. Five years ago, fully online coaching was still seen as an experimental or niche model. In 2026, hybrid has become the professional standard.
Why hybrid wins
Hybrid isn't a compromise — it's an objective improvement for both coach and client in most contexts.
For the coach: Two distinct revenue streams (in-person sessions + online program subscription). Ability to serve clients outside geographic range. Program delivery around the clock without being physically present around the clock. Scalability: it's possible to have 10 online clients for 3 weekly sessions without proportionally more time.
For the client: More touchpoints with their coach — not only during gym sessions. Autonomous follow-up of weekly training via app. Flexibility on scheduling outside supervised sessions. Continuity of coaching during travel or weeks without in-person sessions.
The real challenge: acquisition is still hard
The report also notes something many coaches feel: 4 in 5 describe new client acquisition as harder than before or plateaued. This isn't a contradiction with market growth — it signals the market is growing but so is competition.
The personal training market is worth $15.6B in 2026 and is projected to reach $43.3B by 2036 (12% CAGR). That growth is real. But the number of coaches is growing proportionally — which maintains pressure on acquisition.
